February Blog

January came and went and although the weather didn’t help snow and icy it did go in fast.

Every year I always write down The Last Bird Of The Year & The First Bird Of The Year, sadly I didn’t manage to write down the last bird of 2025 but my first bird of 2026 was a Woodpigeon.

I have noticed a lot of Greenfinches, Chaffinches & Goldfinches up on the tree so I thought I’d tempt them down to my feeders with a dish full of mealworms. So far they’ve only been to the birdbath. I went for a walk down The River Almond to Cramond and saw Heron, Gooseander & Little Grebe it was a nice walk and my first Birding outing of the year.

After what felt like days of rain we finally had a glorious sunny morning so I decided to go Birding at my local patch Cammo Nature Reserve. I had a great morning wondering around and seeing birds. The birds I saw were Great Tit, Bullfinch, Crow, Robin, Woodpigeon, Blackbird & Blue Tit. I also heard a lot of Jays close by but sadly never saw them and I heard the first drumming of the year from a Great Spotted Woodpecker.

I hope you all took part in The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, I wasn’t sure I was going to manage to do it this year because that weekend was wet again but I did mine on the Friday because it was dry and there were a lot of birds around. My results were 14 Goldfinch, 9 Woodpigeon, 14 Greenfinch, 2 Chaffinch, 1 Siskin (nice surprise), 1 Magpie, 1 Dunnock not a big list but still a good count especially seeing the Siskin because it has been ages since I last saw one in the garden.

Now we are into a new month I’m hoping the weather will get drier but I’m still going to go out as much as I can especially this month is my 24th Birding anniversary month. Have a great February month.
