May Blog

As I wake up this morning hearing a Blackbird sing I’m gearing up for a new month as we welcome the month of May. Spring is now here the blossoms are out on the tree making it look springlike especially against blue skies and I have seen the first Swallows & House Martins too.

I have no idea where April went it was a quick month but a busy one. It was a beautiful sunny day one morning I decided to go to Cammo Estate Nature Reserve my local patch. When I arrived it was pretty busy with dog walkers & families but I managed to do my Birding in peace. As I went to the new boardwalk pond I watched a couple of Mallards walking on the boardwalk but was quickly distracted with the distant call of a Buzzard which happened to be soaring in front of my eyes, I watched it circle and call before it then flew out of sight.

As I headed on I could hear lots of Bird song from Blue Tits, Blackbirds, Woodpigeon & Nuthatch. As I got to my next destination the canal area I watched a couple of Moorhens on the canal then a Jay suddenly appeared so my attention drew to that. This is a bird I recently enjoy seeing now they seem to appear at my local patch. They are quite shy birds so to get a picture can be tricky however on this occasion I did manage to get a picture before it flew off, not the greatest show put but I’m still happy.

The surprises just kept on coming as soon as the Jay disappeared I heard a familiar sound coming from the sky as I looked up a skein of Geese flew over which I now think is my last until I see them again in Autumn. As I continued into the woods I spotted a Nuthatch climbing up a tree and call from the branch that was exciting to see and the highlight of my day.

The next day I had a walk along The River Almond walkway and saw Gooseanders sitting on a rock and on my way back I spotted a Dipper among the rocks. It’s been exciting to see them again after not seeing them for a couple of years.

The next day I was out on a another stroll along the neighbourhood and I spotted a Oystercatcher on top of a retirement house it was interesting to see it there though mostly I see Oystercatchers flying over my garden or hearing their calls so it wasn’t surprising.

The exciting part of April I noticed a couple of House Sparrows checking out the nest box in the garden sadly not the one with the camera inside however I was excited to watch them go in and out fly out come back and go in and out. They continued to do that the next day so it looks promising though I haven’t seen them back since so who knows what could happen but all will be revealed in due course. International Dawn Chorus Day is this weekend so I urge you to get up early and listen to the amazing Dawn Chorus it is amazing to hear.
