June Blog

I can’t believe we are in June already May went in just like that. I started the month off celebrating International Dawn Chorus Day. I woke up at 4am and with my window open and my phone I stood up and filmed the Dawn Chorus, I heard mainly Blackbird & Robin.

I had one great morning on Cammo Estate Nature Reserve my local patch. I saw lots of birds mainly Robin,Jay,Crow,Jackdaw,Wren, Mallard & Buzzard. My highlight though was when I was watching the Mallards at the canal I noticed a Heron was busy building its nest. It was very busy flying up to a tree with twigs and then fly down again to collect more it was exciting to watch.

I had a couple of busy few days afterwards on returning from my walk I stopped and watched the House Martins flying about and flying to the old Barnton Hotel. They seem to like it there as they return there every year and it’s always great to watch them.

I had a great full day Birding in Musselburgh it had been awhile since I visited. I started off at The River Esk watching Canada Geese, Feral Pigeons, Mallards & Goldfinch. After I had my lunch I walked to The lagoons and saw Skylarks, Blackcap, Mallard (with ducklings) but when I went to the hides it was rather quiet but did see Oystercatcher & Shellduck but it was a great day out especially since the sun came out.

I have enjoyed watching the Starlings in my garden, they really enjoy the coconut feeder and would eat a whole coconut in a day. It can be annoying but I don’t mind as it’s only this time of the year they visit my garden then they disappear and I don’t see them again until next Spring.

It’s not just Starlings I’ve been watching in the garden recently my other feeders which for some reason were being neglected by birds started attracting them back mainly House Sparrows have been at them but also Blue & Great Tits have been at them too.

This week I was planning a visit to Aberlady Nature Reserve but on Wednesday the forecast said there will be thundery showers in the afternoon so I decided to go Birding locally instead so had a walk along The River Almond Walkway. I had a great morning watching Robins, Mallard, Blackbird & Chaffinch.

The next two days I saw two Buzzards on my walk I heard a Buzzard calling so I stopped it then appeared above me then disappeared the next day in my garden I saw a Buzzard high in the sky getting mobbed by a Gull.

May really was a good month and now I’m looking forward to what June has to offer. When I write my next blog I will be back in Benbecula The Outer Hebrides until then have a great month.
