May Blog

Can’t believe we are in May already, Spring is now underway with blossoms blooming and the arrival of the Swallows. Though it was a quiet month for me I still saw some great birds.

I started the month of by going for a walk and heard the calls of Starlings and saw my first Starling of the year. I know what you are thinking ‘ we see them all the time’ but the truth is in my area we hardly see them till around April -July time then we don’t see them at all until next Spring so it was nice to see one.

Few days later I went for a walk near the airport and went to the spot I used to go plane watching with my Grandpa as a kid and watched a few planes. On the way back I saw my first Skylark of the year I heard it first but saw it quickly above my head which was lovely to watch. Then I saw three Buzzards soaring in the sky.

One morning I decided to go back to my local patch but before I went whilst having breakfast I spotted Starlings in the garden as well as a Robin watching them.

At Cammo Estate Nature Reserve (my local patch) I had a great morning Birding watching birds such as Jay, Blue & Great Tit, Robin, Chiffchaff, Woodpigeon, Jackdaw & Magpie. After weeks of non stop rain there were parts of the park I couldn’t walk to due to it being very muddy and water everywhere, even the canal area was completely flooded you couldn’t even walk along it looked like one big lake I have never seen it like that before.

The Swallows have arrived in Edinburgh because last week I looked out my window and saw my first Swallow of 2024 followed by a few days later I saw two more whilst I was waiting for the bus now I can say Spring has arrived not only that but every morning and evening I’m hearing a Blackbird sing The Dawn Chorus is coming.

It has been a good month but May is going to be a busy month which I will tell you about in the next blog until then have a great Spring.
