July Blog

We have now reached July I can’t believe it the months are just flying in . This will be a short blog because it’s been quiet bird wise because this time of year they are not looking their best after the breeding season but I still had a good month.

Before we had a few days of wet weather which we needed I enjoyed a nice walk on The River Almond to Cramond listening to the birds. I did see a Blue Tit singing and hoping to branch to branch and a Mute Swan with a few others following it.

I had a fantastic morning at my local patch Cammo Estate Nature Reserve. It was a beautiful warm day, I hadn’t been for awhile so it was great to see the new pond in full bloom with its wild flowers. I didn’t see any wildlife but I did hear a Moorhen call. The highlight that day whilst walking in the woods I was hearing baby birds calling I came across a tree stump and spotted a male Great Spotted Woodpecker feeding chicks, I managed to get a photo before it flew off. I waited for a bit case it came back but after waiting a few minutes I carried on walking I didn’t see the parent return but I’m sure it had after I left. On my way back I spotted a Buzzard soaring and calling and a screaming Swift it was a fantastic morning.

For months birds have hardly been at my feeders for some reason but I think it’s because the tree in the middle of the garden was overgrown and they didn’t see it. Decided to get rid of the tree and replace it with my old feeder pole and the birds hsve slowly started coming back it’s been great. I hsve seen the return of Greenfinches, Blue Tits & House Sparrows. Juvenile birds mainly Blue Tits hsve been enjoying it too especially the coconut & fatball feeder Ali g with Starlings, it’s great to see them back and for the first time in months I re filled a feeder this morning.

This month I will make the most of my Birding as next month I will take a break to enjoy The Edinburgh Festival and continue Birding in September. I will let you know how my July was in the next blog.
